1% for the Planet
Since 1985, Patagonia has pledged 1% of sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. They've awarded over $140 million in cash and in-kind donations to domestic and international grassroots environmental groups making a difference in their local communities. 1% for the Planet is an alliance of businesses that understand the necessity of protecting the natural environment. They understand that profit and loss are directly linked to its health, and are concerned with the social and environmental impacts of industry.
Fair Trade Certified™
Fair Trade Certified™ is a certification that ensures products are made according to rigorous social, environmental, and economic standards. For apparel, this means the factory workers who made the product receive additional wages through a community development fund, work in safer conditions, and are supported by policies that promote empowerment and sustainability. Through their partnership with Fair Trade USA™, Patagonia has been making Fair Trade clothing since 2014. Today, they are proud to offer more styles made in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory than any other apparel brand—over 90% of their line. To date, Patagonia’s Fair Trade program has impacted more than 85,000 workers around the globe.
Organic Cotton
Conventional cotton farming relies heavily on synthetic chemicals—nearly 1.5 million pounds of pesticides were used in California alone in 2021. These substances degrade soil health, pollute water, and harm ecosystems. In the 1990s, Patagonia investigated its cotton supply and realized that conventional cotton, though plant-based, was far from natural. In 1996, they committed to using only 100% organic virgin cotton—grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or GMO seeds. They also use recycled cotton whenever possible, reducing CO₂e emissions by 82% per kilogram compared to conventional virgin cotton.
